Sometimes life does not make sense. Okay, most of the time life does not make sense. Bad things happen—or just dumb things or inconvenient or unpleasant things—and it would seem like they’d take the sweet out of everything. Sometimes life makes about as much sense as putting balsamic vinegar and black pepper into a blueberry pie.

But the bad things happen for a reason. Too much sweetness, and what do we learn? How can we become stronger if we never have to muscle through anything? The bad enhances the good when the good comes—and it does come. Even though the bad is the scar of sin on a fallen world, the bad, so long as it lasts on earth, can make us stronger. God is bigger than the bad, and all things happen for a purpose—even the inconvenient, unpleasant, and dumb things. Facing badness can make us better. The bitter can make us sweeter.
