Bless its heart, it’s not its fault. It’s not January’s fault that it’s cold and dreary without the promise of Christmas. Once New Year’s ends, it’s just four weeks of rain and early evenings. And school, when Christmas break wasn’t long enough and you’re not ready.

January is kind of a non-month. Nothing much happens. You just plod. You plod until February, which is just as sloppy but still close to spring and has a few more holidays. January is a month for existing. for working. For not going outside if you can possibly help it.

It’s sad, though. January is such a friendly-sounding month. For some reason, though, it’s just so dreary.

Maybe if I moved to New Zealand….
